1. It Follows
This is a film about a sexually-transmitted curse. If you catch it, a demon starts following you, and you must pass on the curse by having sex with someone to stop it catching and killing you. Horrifying!
2. The Cabin In The Woods
The Cabin In The Woods has the set up of a traditional slasher – five sexy college students go to a remote cabin where not all is as it seems – but it smartly winks at all the typical horror movie clichés.
3. Green Room
A punk band witnesses a murder at a Neo-Nazi bar, and skin and hair goes flying (literally). You’ll never look at Patrick Stewart the same way again.
4. The Invitation
A man is invited to the home of his ex-wife and her new husband for a dinner party, but begins to think that something’s off, and the couple have something else in mind for their guests. He’s absolutely right, of course.
5. The Woman In Black
This is just a straight up gothic ghost movie with little to no gore, which is pretty welcome sometimes, right? Daniel Radcliffe stars as a man getting the sh*ts put up him by the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman.
6. Let The Right One In
Now a modern classic, Let The Right One in tells the story of Oskar, a bullied boy who gets his revenge after he falls in love with Eli, a vampire.
7. The Exorcism of Emily Rose
This one will give you a nice scare without keeping you up half the night in terror, if that’s what you prefer. The Exorcism of Emily Rose is loosely based on a true story about a woman who died after an attempted exorcism.
8. The Descent
When a caving expedition goes wrong, a group of friends are slowly picked off by strange predators. This has all sorts of nightmarish things going on – the dark, small spaces, awful scary monsters who want to eat you, the lot.
9. Insidious
Creepy kid alert! A comatose child becomes a vessel for evil spirits, and his parents are like “Oh f**k”. The image of that thing standing behind Patrick Wilson will never leave our minds.
10. Gerald’s Game
It’s a great time for Stephen King adaptations. This new Netflix original stars Carla Gugino as a woman left handcuffed to a bed after her husband dies during a sex game. Fun!
